Autumn Colours

This image was shot with a Canon Kiss Digital X and a Sigma DC 17-70mm f2.8-4.5. The photo was taken at 53mm, ISO 100 and f 6.3 for 1/160th sec while handheld from a moving ferry.

This scene comes from Lake Towada in northern Japan. Here I was trying to capture the fall colours and the rock formations along the lake shore. While framing this photo I was trying to offset the dominant vertical rock formation to the left of the center of the frame. A also liked the subtle red reflections bouncing of the lake's deep green surface.

In post processing I cropped the photo to a slightly longer cinematic (16:9) format. I also boosted contrast, added a little more saturation and used a little sharpening.

Forest of Trees

Canon Kiss Digital X & Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USMISO100 at f11 for 0.8 seconds, 70mm

This photo was taken in a forest an hour west of Sendai in Northern Japan. What I liked about this scene was the continuation of all the parrallel lines is these trees. The first photo I took had the green bushes higher up into the photo but after looking at the photo on the on camera display, I realised that they would be better balanced with the greenery above if I put them in the lower third of the photo. So I reframed the shot and this is what I ended up with. Being inside this forest on a cloudy day made the lighting softer and not so contrasty but there was less of it. This ment I had to use a tripod. I also stopped down the lens to get a lot of depth of field.

In post processing, after making some standard adjustments to get the photo looking reasonable, I also adjusted the colours a little. There was a lot of yellow in the photo, so I shifted some yellow towards green and some other yellow towards orange so I could get some stronger colour contrast.

Autumn Leaves

This image was shot with a Canon EOS Kiss Digital X body and a Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM Lens. The photo was taken at 200mm, ISO 100 and f3.5 for 1/320 sec, using a tripod and remote camera release.

This is an image taken of the fall colours in Japan.

Here I was trying to get the major diagional line from the branch running throught the photo. I used a short DOF here to give the background a blurred red look with some sharp leaves amontst the branch. I also increased the black point in Post Processing to simplify the detail in the branch.
